Living with noticeable hair loss is no longer to be expected due to the incredible developments that have been made in the treatment of men’s hair loss. With the introduction of Propecia, generic name Finasteride, it is now possible to stop or slow down the progression of hair loss in the majority of men who use it.

Fifty percent of all men experience male-patterned baldness; the most common type of hair loss beginning around the age of thirty.

It generally starts as a receding hairline; a thinning of hair on the crown and temples; resulting in a U-shape pattern around the head. In some rare cases, a male may end up completely bald.

The condition is genetic; caused by an abundance of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes the hair follicles to become weak and eventually inactive, resulting in a lack of hair re-growth. This process can take decades, so if you have experienced rapid hair loss (under a year) or scalp irritation causing bald patches, you should seek medical advice from your GP to ensure there are no underlying thyroid conditions or other reasons for the condition.

One of the most effective treatments for general hair loss is finasteride, which prevents further hair loss and increases hair growth.

Approximately 40–60% of men aged thirty–39 experience hair loss topically, but more than 40% experience hair loss post-treatment, which is usually defined as hair loss that “cures or disappears” after a few months. Cures or decreasing hair growth is known as reduction in hair loss.Approximately 40–60% of men aged thirty–39 experience hair loss post-treatment, which is usually defined as hair loss that “cures or disappears after therapy”.

It’s important to remember that both Propecia and finasteride are taken before any sexual activity, so it’s crucial to GP advice that you start taking them immediately after sex. In most men who take Propecia, finasteride is started at the first sign of a receding hairline or wheezing; in men who do not start taking finasteride, the drug may be started immediately.

On the other hand, post-finasteride, the medication continues to be taken for several months after the cause of hair loss is suspected, even in the absence of symptoms. Therefore, if you’re taking finasteride immediately, you are more likely to get your hair loss will be effectively reversed.

It’s a good point to know that if you have any underlying medical conditions, such as liver or kidney problems, you should not take finasteride; instead, it’s best to rely on your GP to determine if it’s the right treatment for your specific needs.

Part of the recommended starting dose of finasteride is 1 mg, which is very effective especially for men with mild to moderate hair loss top to low in severity. However, the lower effective doses may not be suitable for everyone and it’s recommended to use the lowest dose for the most effective results.

If you are taking finasteride and think you are at risk of developing male-patterned alopecia, which can appear several years after starting the medication, then the 1 mg dose may be better option for you. However, the effects typically become more apparent 3 months or longer after starting the medication since thea few grams of finasteride produces maximum effects.

It’s important to GP practice that you stop taking finasteride, however, this can happen or it’s irreversible; hence, you should NOT take more finasteride than your doctor has suggested.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have conditions similar to your that are not treatable with finasteride (such as low libido, erectile dysfunction), you should not take the drug; instead, it's best to not consider it as a option.

Appropriately pick a starting dose of finasteride between 1 and 5 mg, and then monitor your progress throughout the treatment.

Hi everyone,

I've been using Propecia for a couple of years now and had a lot of issues with my hair loss. I've been dealing with thinning hair for several months now and noticed a slight increase in hair shedding. My dermatologist suggested I take a 1mg tablet before I had to stop because I was experiencing side effects of the medication. The 1mg dose of Propecia works about the same as 1mg once a day so I took it twice a day to help. I have been on 1mg for 3 months and haven't had any side effects so I thought I'd share my experience. I've noticed an increase in shedding but the shedding hasn't gone much beyond that. My hair is fine and the shedding is normal but I'm wondering if any of you guys have any concerns? I've been on a 2mg dose for a couple of weeks and have started shedding a little bit. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for any feedback!

I've been using Propecia for two years and have noticed a slight increase in hair shedding. The 1mg dose works about the same as 1mg once a day so I took it twice a day to help. I have noticed an increase in shedding but the shedding isn't going much beyond that.

Thank you for the detailed info!

I've been on a 2mg dose for a couple of months and have noticed a slight increase in shedding.

I've been using Propecia for a couple of years and have noticed some changes in my hair. I've noticed some of them have changed as well. My hair is fine and the shedding is normal. I don't want to be responsible for my hair loss so it doesn't affect the quality of my hair, but I do know that some people might have had side effects from the medication and they're usually mild. I did have to stop the medication a couple of days ago because I felt like there was an increase in my shedding, but I'm sure that has been going on since. I'm not sure if there's anything else that could be causing the increase in shedding or if it's something else. I'm not sure what else could be causing the increase in shedding but I'm sure the symptoms are the same so I don't have to worry about that.

Thanks for your help. I'm glad you found the information helpful. I would definitely speak with a dermatologist first if it wasn't clear from your experience.

I agree. If it wasn't for the Propecia or any other medication, I would not be taking the 1mg dose. I would still take the 1mg and see how my hair grows back after stopping the medication. I've been on a daily dose for about three months and have only been on 1mg for about a week. I've never seen any side effects from using Propecia in my life. It's been quite a while since I've taken it, and I'm not sure if it's related to the medication or something else.

Thanks again for all the help!

Love,

I've been using Propecia for a couple of years and had a lot of issues with my hair loss.

The science behind the popular hair loss drugs Propecia and Minoxidil

Published on March 9, 2024

“I had a conversation with a friend who had been diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia, and she told me about Propecia and Minoxidil. As a doctor, I was able to see the strengths of each drug and how it worked to stop hair loss. It was a game changer for my hair. I had a lot of experience with hair loss treatments, and I was excited to learn more about them.” - Dr. Scott Gail

Propecia and Minoxidil is one of the most popular and effective treatments for male pattern hair loss. It’s a popular and effective drug that is used to stop hair loss and prevent further hair loss. The drug works by blocking an enzyme that causes an enzyme in the scalp to turn into an enzyme. The hair is typically lost from the scalp, and the results of the treatment can vary from person to person. Propecia and Minoxidil are both medications that treat hair loss. They are both used to treat the underlying condition of hair loss in men.

If you’re looking to try a hair loss treatment, the science behind Propecia and Minoxidil will help you choose the treatment that suits your needs and health. These drugs work by blocking the production of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that is linked to hair loss and can cause hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop producing hair. Propecia is used to treat androgenetic alopecia in men.
